Overeducated and chronically overextended, mostly.
I started writing posts in 2003 when I came back from several years of field research. Initially, I sent them as emails to friends and family. I had a locked carrel in the library of my university where I spent 8 + hours a day reading and organizing and writing my dissertation. I would send these posts out on my laptop and always put "missives from the birdcage"-- a reference to the cage-like carrel where I was locked in to do work-- as the subject line. Eventually, I moved to D.C. and left the birdcage behind (and finally finished my dissertation), but I kept the name when I started blogging.
